If someone is willing to steal your car, it is quite likely they would not be adverse to harming you. It might be prudent to have some means of defense when confronting such an individual. When protecting your property, (as is your right) and when confronting the said thief, should they present a threat to your well-being, you should have the right to self defense- this would not be a case of becoming the attacker, but rather being the defender. What occurred in the case described is unknown. I should be able to to try to protect my property, and I should be allowed to defend myself while doing so.
