Episode 8 – Power Factor


Power Factor simply put is a method used in shooting sports to create a level playing field of all participants.

 

How to calculate Power Factor:

100 gr bullet traveling at 600 fps has a power factor of 60: (100×600)/1000=60.00

77 gr bullet traveling at 800 fps has a power factor of 61.6 (77×800)/1000=61.60

200 gr bullet traveling at 400 fps has a power factor of 80 (200×400)/1000=80.00

Minimum Power Factors:

SASS 60

IPSC

Minor: less than 165

Major: 165 and above

Minimum: 125

IDPA

Minimum: 125

Custom Defensive Pistol (which is restricted to semi automatics chambered for .45 ACP)and Enhanced Service Revolver division, which have power factors of 165,000
